Always follow your dreams. Wish come true

Recently, I read the romantic story “Scarlet Sails” by Alexander Green. A. Green lived a very hard life. He was in prison and exiled, but escaped from there. It was then that A. Green began writing the story “Scarlet Sails,” and in 1920 he finished it. This is the most famous work of A. Green. The writer defined the genre of his work as “extravaganza”. The story begins, like many literary works, with characteristics of the main characters, but after reading just a little, I realized that this book was special.
In the story “Scarlet Sails,” Green tells the story of the girl Assol, who lost her mother early and grew up with her father, they lived on the fact that he made children’s toys-ships. Longren, Assol's father, took on all the housework; daughter and father loved each other very much. But still, Assol was unhappy, since none of the village children communicated with her. And she lived with one single dream, which was given to her by Egle, a famous collector of songs, legends, stories and fairy tales. He told her that someday a prince would come for her on a ship with scarlet sails, and from then on Assol looked hopefully at the horizon of the sea, waiting for a ship with scarlet sails.
The second main character in the story is Arthur Gray, who, on the contrary, was born into a rich family, and he also had his own dream - to become a captain and he became one. At the age of 15, he went on board a ship as a simple sailor and during the voyage, the captain of the ship taught Arthur various marine sciences. After four years of sailing, returning home, Arthur took a large sum of money from his parents to purchase his own ship. And from that moment on, he sailed the seas and oceans as a captain. And one day, during his next trip, Arthur met Assol, whom he really liked. And having learned about her dream, he decided and fulfilled it.
I believe that the main idea of the author of the story is that a person in his life needs to have the most cherished dream, believe and strive for it, and only then will it come true. After all, Alexander Greene wrote this work not at the best times of his life, and, probably, in my opinion, he wanted to create an example of dreams, faith, and hope.
Assol is the main character of the romantic story, a reserved and beautiful girl who loved her father very much, trusted only him and lived the dream that the storyteller gave her. Arthur Gray is a freedom-loving person, a leader by character, respecting the opinions of others, educated and understanding, and purposefully pursuing his goals. All these qualities made him a famous person. Longren is Assol's father, her life mentor, and loving father. In it, the author tried to show an example of what a father should be. In the story “Scarlet Sails” Alexander Green often uses nature to express the mood, feelings and spiritual mood of the characters.
I believe that Greene first of all wanted to tell the reader that at any time in your life you need to live in a world of reality and dreams.

Composition

The power of dreams can change lives, turn the whole world upside down, and create miracles. The author of the wonderful story “Scarlet Sails,” Alexander Green, sincerely believed in this. The writer knew this power, for which there are no barriers, nothing is impossible. You just need to firmly believe in your dream and wait for a miracle. Green’s own dream helped him create a wonderful world,” in which brave, sincere men and beautiful women live, where cities with wonderful names stand by the sea - Lise, Zurbagan.

In the story we meet little Assol, raised by a kind and loving father. She lives a solitary life: her peers push her away, adults do not like the girl, transferring their dislike for her father onto her. One day, while walking through the forest, Assol met a strange man who told her a fairy tale about a ship with scarlet sails. And the girl believed in this fairy tale, made it a part of her life, a part of her soul - her dream. And, not paying attention to the ridicule, she began to wait for her prince. She knew that the day would come when he would come for her and say: “Hello, Assol! Far, far from here, I saw you in a dream and came to take you forever to my kingdom.”

Two people, created for each other, go through intricate paths to meet. The world of Arthur Gray is completely different from life in the seaside village in which Assol and her father live. Wealth and luxury are available to him, but Arthur is not inclined to continue the lifestyle prescribed to him by birth. He is endowed with a living soul, dreams of the sea and sails. This dream leads to Gray becoming a sailor. “He was born a captain, wanted to be one and became one.” One day, by chance, his ship washed ashore near the village where Assol lived. Walking through the forest, the young man saw a sleeping girl, and she immediately awakened exciting feelings in his soul. He looked at her not only with his eyes, but in a completely different way: “Everything moved, everything smiled in him.” Later, in a tavern, he asked who this girl was, and was mockingly told the story of a madwoman who was waiting for the prince on a ship with scarlet sails.

“It was as if two strings sounded together...” The young man decided that the dream of the beautiful stranger must certainly come true. And he must help this. Moreover, he had already decided for himself that this girl would certainly become his wife. Gray ordered sails made of scarlet silk for his ship. In addition, he gathered musicians who could play in such a way as to make hearts cry. After all, “the sea and love do not tolerate pedants.” And when everything was ready, he set off towards his dream.

Meanwhile, the unsuspecting Assol looked at the sea, outlined with a golden thread on the horizon and throwing scarlet reflections at the girl’s feet. There, at the end of the world, what she had dreamed of for so long was happening. And now the morning has already come when a beautiful ship with sails blazing with crimson fire approached the shore. And there he was - the one for whom she had been waiting for a long time. “He looked at her with a smile that warmed and hurried.” And Assol, shouting: “I’m here! I'm here! It’s me!”, she rushed towards him straight across the water.

This is how Gray and Assol found each other on the morning of a summer day. Here it is - the magical, all-conquering power of dreams. The girl was waiting for a miracle, she was ready for it, she believed in it - and it happened. A dream, if you believe in it with all the strength of your soul, becomes a powerful creative force. And the wonderful and kind story of Alexander Green convinces us of this in the best way.

Lesson Objectives: training in working with literary text in electronic form; working with positive educational information posted on the Internet; development of creative, inventive thinking; nurturing faith in one’s strengths, capabilities, goodness, miracles created by the forces of one’s soul; formation of the basis for the perception of universal human moral values.

Technologies: problem-based learning, technology for developing critical thinking, TRIZ technology.

Equipment:

Laptops,

- “electronic books” for students with excerpts from A. Green’s extravaganza “Scarlet Sails”, collected in thematic folders: “Assol”, “Gray”, “World of People”, “World of Things”, “Faith in Miracle”, “Name of the Hero” "; illustrations by Nonna Aleshina for A. Green’s work “Scarlet Sails, reproduction of Viktor Vasnetsov’s painting “Jesus Crucified” - these materials are given in the attached files;

During the classes.

I.Teacher: Each of Green's works is read with pleasure. But my favorite is “Scarlet Sails”. Green defined the genre of his narrative as extravaganza. What is an extravaganza?

Definition from the dictionary.

“Scarlet Sails” has become a brand for many events. In St. Petersburg, every year a holiday is held in honor of graduates, the name of which is “Scarlet Sails”.

View the video “Water Extravaganza”, part 3 (celebration of graduates “Scarlet Sails”, St. Petersburg, 2009: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYoELdgvPWc).

In Yalta, the children's film festival was also called “Scarlet Sails”. The festival was opened in 2009 by Vasily Lanovoi (performing the role of Gray), who sailed on a ship with scarlet sails.

It is common to think that in adventure literature the main thing is what happened, and not to whom it happened. Characters and all sorts of emotional matters are of no use to her. Action, a rapid flight of intrigue - that's what captivates the reader.

Let’s try to figure it out first: in “Scarlet Sails” the main thing is what happened or the characters, emotional experiences.

So, what happened in the Scarlet Sails extravaganza? State it in just a few words.

Students' answer.

But why did happiness come to Assol? By chance or not? In order to answer the question, we will work with the text in electronic folders called “Assol” and “Gray”.

To form an opinion about a person’s character, you need to analyze his actions, his attitude towards people and the world around him. Therefore, in the folders “Assol” and “Gray” the folders are placed: “The World of People and the “World of Things”.

II.Work with text.

Teacher: Open the “World of People” folder in the “Assol” folder. The folder contains excerpts from the text, divided into chapters.

The text is concentrated so that students can quickly build a chain of events and pay attention to the main thing. Conversation by chapter.

Chapter 1.

Why did the residents of Kaperna avoid Longren?

Chapter 2.

Why did Assol grow up without friends?

Why did her peers “cross out little Assol once and for all from the sphere of their patronage and influence”?

How do you understand Longren’s words: “Eh, Assol, do they really know how to love?”

Chapter 3.

What was Assol's life like?

Chapter 4.

How do Assol Khan Menners and the coal miner see it? Why are their opinions so different?

Now let’s move on to the “People’s World” folder in the “Gray” e-book.

Chapter 1.

How do you understand the words: “Gray’s father and mother were arrogant slaves of their position, wealth and the laws of that society, in relation to which they could say “we”?

Chapter 2.

How did Gray grow up in a huge, gloomy and majestic house?

Chapter 3.

Describe Gray's actions in Chapter 3.

Chapter 4.

Choose key phrases that tell you how Gray’s life developed from the age of 15 to 20.

Teacher: Let's compare: what are the similarities and differences between the destinies of Assol and Gray?

Children's answers.

Then the teacher draws attention to the fact that although the children grew up in families of different social status, in both the Assol family and the Gray family the parents treated their children with great love and respect. What fate was destined for Gray?

Children's answers.

Teacher: A person is characterized not only by his attitude towards people, but also by his attitude towards objects.

Let’s open the “World of Things” folder in the “Assol” folder.

1, 2 chapters.

How does Assol speak, deprived of the opportunity to communicate with her peers and with surrounding objects?

How does this characterize her?

How do you understand the words: “I looked through the eyes of a child”?

Read what comparisons the writer makes when describing the color of the sails (“it burned like wine, like a rose, blood, lips, scarlet velvet and crimson fire”)? What does the author achieve by putting so many comparisons in a row?

Now let's work with the "World of Things" folder in the "Gray" folder.

Chapter 1

Tell us how Arthur Gray is characterized by his action when he ruined an expensive painting by covering the nails on the bloody hands of Jesus Christ with blue paint?

Why didn't the father punish his son?

Chapter 2

What impression did the picture in the library of a ship make on Gray? How does this characterize the hero?

Chapter 3

What did Gray carry in his “Secret”? Why?

How do you understand the expressions: “aristocratic imagination”, “picturesque atmosphere”?

Conclusion: as we see, Assol and Gray had enormous power of imagination. Pictures were born in their minds depicting a world of strong, brave and kind people; a world full of bright events. Why such pictures?

III.Work on developing imagination.

Teacher: Do you think imagination is given to a person at birth or can it be developed? Let's try to move forward along the path of developing our imagination.

We live not only in the world of people, but also in the world of objects. I think that objects, observing people, also make up a characteristic about them. They just can’t say it. But we’ll try. To do this, you need to enter the image of a particular object.

Assignment (using the RAFT technique for developing critical thinking): present the subject’s reasoning about the hero. Items are drawn in a lottery. The tickets say:

Assol:“Coal Miner’s Basket”, “Plants”, “Toy Yacht with Scarlet Sails”.

Gray:“Painting of a ship”, “Painting of Jesus Christ crucified”, “Ship “Secret”.

IV.Why did Assol's dream come true?

Teacher: In order for a dream to come true, a miracle to happen, is it enough just to believe in it? Or is something else needed for this?

To answer this question, let’s work in the “Faith in Miracles” folder. Let’s open it in the “Assol” folder.

How did Assol’s father react to Egle’s kind joke? Why didn't he try to reassure his daughter?

Do you think the scene in the book with the beggar who laughs at the fairy tale collector’s prediction is accidental?

Now let’s analyze the contents of the “Faith in Miracle” folder in the “Gray” folder.

How did the people around Gray perceive his desire to replace the sails with scarlet ones? Why?

Watching a video clip from the feature film “Scarlet Sails” (director A. Ptushko, Mosfilm studio, 1961).

Teacher: So, you heard from Gray’s monologue what needs to be done for a miracle to come true. And now we will carefully re-read his words again and fill out the table (we use the “insert” technique of the technology for developing critical thinking).

MonologueGray.

...I understood one simple truth. It is about doing so-called miracles with your own hands. When the main thing for a person is to receive the dearest nickel, it is easy to give this nickel, but when the soul conceals the seed of a fiery plant - a miracle, give him this miracle if you are able. He will have a new soul and you will have a new one. When the head of the prison himself releases the prisoner, when the billionaire gives the scribe a villa, an operetta singer and a safe, and the jockey at least once holds his horse for another horse who is unlucky, then everyone will understand how pleasant it is, how inexpressibly wonderful. But there are no less miracles: a smile, fun, forgiveness, and the right word spoken at the right time. To own this is to own everything. As for me, our beginning - mine and Assol's - will remain for us forever in the scarlet glow of the sails created by the depths of the heart, which knows what love is. Do you understand me?

"V"
put a "v" (yes) in the margin if what you read matches what you know or thought you knew

" + "
put "+" (plus) in the margin if what you are reading is new to you;

" - "

V.Observation of the names of the heroes.

Teacher: Often writers, in order to better convey to the reader the idea of the work, encrypt the names of the heroes. Let's try to figure out whether there is a secret in the names of the heroes of the Scarlet Sails extravaganza?

The teacher reads an excerpt from the text:

“What's your name, baby?

“Assol,” said the girl, hiding the toy given by Egl in the basket.

“Okay,” the old man continued his incomprehensible speech, without taking his eyes off, in the depths of which a smile of a friendly disposition gleamed. “Actually, I shouldn’t have asked your name.” It’s good that it’s so strange, so monotonous, musical, like the whistle of an arrow or the noise of a sea shell: what would I do if you were called one of those euphonious, but unbearably familiar names that are alien to the Beautiful Unknown?”

Alexander Green explains to the reader what the name Assol – the Beautiful Unknown – is consonant with.

And Arthur Gray? Was it by chance that the author gave him such a name? The author calls the heroine only by name. What about the hero? At the beginning of the story, having mentioned the name of the hero - Arthur, the author seems to forget about him. And then he calls the hero only by his last name - Gray. We cannot know exactly the thoughts of the author, but can only guess what idea the author wanted to convey to the reader. Let's try to understand the etymology of the word "gray". A video clip will help you (in a video fragment of an amateur animated film, a boat with scarlet sails moves towards the shore against a dark background; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EK0xloxJUZg).

VI.Conclusion.

Now we will watch the video “About the boat” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIjWiOPvyzg). It was created by the artist of the Sand Theater Sergei Nazarov. In the comments to his drawing on the sand, he writes: “... I heard a song. The song caught my attention and was spinning in my head for several days. And on one of the sleepless nights I turned on “About a Boat”, went to my work desk - and this is the result...” The song that made such an impression on the artist was written by the lead singer of the group “Anomaly” Yulia Syomina. Here's how she talks about the source of her inspiration: “This song was born by chance. While attending a concert in the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk, we had dinner at a restaurant owned by our friend, an extraordinary person, Alexander Tyumentsev (the author of the idea and director of the video for the song “Yellow”), where a picture was painted on the wall: in the middle of a stormy sea, a ship with scarlet sails , on board of which there is a lonely figure of a man looking somewhere into the distance. Impressed by the picture and this extraordinary person, I wrote a few lines. I showed them to our musicians, who unanimously insisted on continuing. The arrangement appeared instantly and a week later the song was heard on Kazakh radio stations. And now, judging by the feedback from listeners, I realized that I did everything right! This song is dedicated to all those who look somewhere into the distance and those who are waiting for their scarlet sails.”

Conversation after watching the video.

Teacher: Tell me, in your opinion, what is the main line in the song?

VI. Homework.

1) (Task with elements of TRIZ technology, i.e. the task is constructed as a TRIZ task, which is based on a contradiction that can only be resolved with the help of an invention). How would you like to remind the world that scarlet sails bring hope for happiness?

2) What fairy tale about the fact that miracles exist and come true would you offer to the world? Both long and short versions are accepted.

The story “Scarlet Sails” by Alexander Green, written in 1923, enjoyed constant success among readers. A 50 years ago, in 1961, a film of the same name was made.

At one time, the film received criticism from critics. The director's moves were called too straightforward, the color used in the frame was bazaar, and the performance of many supporting actors was mediocre.

Time judged differently... Several generations of viewers have already been fascinated by this beautiful and kind fairy tale, in which love turns reckless dream into reality.

A group of authors of the American film “The Secret” (By the way... The ship on which Captain Gray took Assol was called “The Secret”. An amazing coincidence...)

If we simplify the lengthy theories about the fulfillment of desires, we can derive the formula: “Make a wish and wait, without doubting for a second that it will definitely come true.”

Assol had no doubt!

Let your dreams come true

“Now,” said Gray, “when my sails are red, the wind is good, but in my heart
tune you in with my thoughts.” (A. Green, “Scarlet Sails”)

It is difficult to say what brings a person more pleasure - the fulfillment of one’s own desire or the fulfillment of someone else’s dream.

Tips for “Assol”:

Tell others in detail about your desire (this way, firstly, you can contact the prince himself, and secondly, the prince will be pleased to know that many spectators will watch his beautiful act).
Describe in detail the feeling of delight that will overcome you at the sight of the “scarlet sails.” Arthur Gray must understand how accurately he managed to realize your dream.
The portrait of the wish-fulfiller should also become public knowledge (you must agree that if, figuratively speaking, Santa Claus was expected with a gift, and grandmother gave it to him, this is not so romantic).
And one more thing... Make a wish for something real. Scarlet sails, despite all the outward fabulousness, could still be sewn.

For those who like the role of Arthur Gray:

Do not hurry! Read how carefully the captain prepared for the delightful appearance on the horizon. How I chose the color of the fabric, thought through the musical accompaniment, how I prepared the entire “Secret” team for a surprise.
Do not skimp on emotions and beautiful words - this is an integral part of the beautiful fairy tale about scarlet sails...
Create “miracles with your own hands” more often!

“Gray bent down, her hands grabbed his belt. Assol closed her eyes; then, quickly opening her eyes, she boldly smiled at his radiant face and, out of breath, said:

Absolutely like that.

And you too, my child! - Gray said, taking the wet jewel out of the water. - Here I come. Do you recognize me?

The story “Scarlet Sails” by Alexander Green, written in 1923, enjoyed constant success among readers. And 50 years ago, in 1961, a film of the same name was made.

Time decided otherwise... Several generations of viewers have been fascinated by this beautiful and kind fairy tale, in which love turns a reckless dream into reality.

Lanovoi got into character
“I do what exists as an ancient idea of beauty
unrealizable, and that, in essence, is as feasible and possible as
country walk..." (A. Green, "Scarlet Sails")

Imagine... 1961, summer. There are many vacationers on the Yalta beach. And suddenly a ship with scarlet sails appears on the horizon!

Yes! It was Lanovoy who took a “country walk” on the barquentine “Alpha”, decorated with 500 meters of scarlet silk, from which pioneer ties were made. Lanovoy’s wife Tamara was vacationing in Yalta. Inspired by the role of the noble Captain Gray, he decided to amaze his wife with a beautiful act and suggested slightly changing the ship's route.

Beautiful...

The film “Scarlet Sails” was already the fifth film work of Vasily Lanovoy, so the audience enthusiastically received the appearance of the 27-year-old handsome man in the role of Arthur Gray.

Director A. Ptushko had more doubts about the candidacy for the role of the romantic Assol.

Assol, “swept up by the irresistible wind of events”
“Hello, Assol! - he will say. - Far, far from here I saw you
in a dream and came to take you forever to his kingdom.” (A. Green, “Scarlet Sails”)

Still from the film "Scarlet Sails"

For photo tests, Vertinskaya wore a curly wig and a long dress. It was impossible to take your eyes off this Assol...

Beautiful...

She fit into the role so much that the director easily forgave both her lack of acting experience and her inability to act in front of the camera. However, Vertinskaya never managed to voice the heroine. Actress Nina Gulyaeva reads the text behind the scenes.

Fans of the story “about scarlet sails”
“...thanks to her, I understood one simple truth. It is about doing so-called miracles with your own hands. If you think about it, there are a lot of films with the plot “about scarlet sails”. The heroes of melodramas suffer for a long time, wait and sigh, but in the end they always get what they want. For many years now, screenwriters have been exploiting our desire to empathize with a hero who has a dream.

We experience special pleasure when this very dream comes true in the most sugary-sweet form. A rich handsome man climbs the fire escape for a long time to the beauty played by Julia Roberts in order to persuade her to marry. He has a bouquet and a limousine with him. The desire, of course, is more down-to-earth, but the main character of the film, frankly speaking, is not Assol...

Documentary stories also often remind me of my favorite fairy tale. In the next program about renovation, they showed a young man who decorated a country house for his mother. We are shown for a long time the genuine tears of joy and delight of an elderly woman: “I have dreamed of such a chair by the window all my life!” The son knew this and, with the help of designers, made his wish come true in small details. Why isn't Captain Gray to you?

And there is also a diverse group of “teachers of happiness.” It is impossible to list all the adherents of the psychology of positive thinking, here are just a few names:

Paulo Coelho, for whom “... only one thing makes the fulfillment of desires impossible - this is the fear of failure”
Natalya Pravdina, whose dreams always come true
Vadim Zeland, who built “Reality Transurfing”
A group of authors of the American film “The Secret” (By the way... The ship on which Captain Gray took Assol was called “The Secret”. An amazing coincidence...)

If we simplify the lengthy theories about the fulfillment of wishes, we can derive the formula: “Make a wish and wait, without doubting for a second that it will definitely come true.”

Assol had no doubt!

Let your dreams come true
“Now,” said Gray, “when my sails are red, the wind is good, and in my heart
I'm happier than an elephant at the sight of a small bun, I'll try
tune you in with my thoughts.” (A. Green, “Scarlet Sails”)

It is difficult to say what brings a person more pleasure - the fulfillment of one’s own desire or the fulfillment of someone else’s dream.

Still from the film "Scarlet Sails"

Most of us have had to play both roles many times, haven't we? How do you feel when a child finds a gift under the tree from Santa Claus? Yes, Arthur Gray’s heart was also pounding with joy...

In order for miracles to happen more often in our lives, both parties (let’s call them dreamers and doers, “Assol” and “Gray”) need to comply with several conditions.

Do not skimp on emotions and beautiful words - this is an integral part of the beautiful fairy tale about scarlet sails. I really liked this interpretation of a wonderful fairy tale! THE MAIN THING is to achieve the goal! This is a motto for life! Thank you lady!

The writer Alexander Green himself called the story about Assol “Scarlet Sails” an extravaganza. The most poetic work, saturated with sunlight and love for people, was written by him during a difficult period of his life. Could he have imagined that it would become his calling card and that almost every boy would dream of long sea voyages, and every girl would dream of a young captain who would one day sail for her?

History of creation

Sitting in a cold room, occasionally looking out the window at the dull, cold and half-starved Petrograd of 1920, Alexander Green created the sunny extravaganza “Scarlet Sails” about Assol, which will become a symbol of dreams for many. Initially, the writer planned to call his work “Red Sails,” but did not, so that harsh censors would not consider the use of this “revolutionary” color inappropriate. Green himself loved the color red and saw nothing political in it: “The color of wine, ruby and dawn, small tangerines smelling of spicy oil. This color is always cheerful and accurate.”

“Scarlet Sails” was well received by both readers and critics. Even “Krasnaya Gazeta” wrote that this “sweet and azure, like the sea, fairy tale was created for the rest of the soul.” But the true hymn to this work was the opening of youth clubs, cafes and restaurants, children's centers and dance studios called “Scarlet Sails” throughout the country. It was then that the name of the wonderful writer became known to every Soviet person. Millions of readers empathized with the girl with the unusual name Assol and admired Captain Gray, who took her away on his ship.

Briefly about the plot

The extravaganza is based on two images - Arthur Gray and young Assol. The girl does not remember her mother and lives with her father, who makes toy boats and sells them. One day a girl went into town with her father’s toys. Among them was a small yacht with scarlet silk sails. And the storyteller Egl, whom she met along the way, said that one day a ship with scarlet sails would come to the port, and Assol would sail away with a handsome prince. The city soon learned about this conversation and everyone began to laugh at the unfortunate Assol, calling her almost crazy. But the girl dreamed, believed and waited. “Happiness sat in her like a fluffy kitten” - if you need to characterize Assol with a quote from “Scarlet Sails,” this phrase fits perfectly.

Arthur Gray grew up in wealth and luxury, but dreamed of becoming a captain - at the age of fifteen he ran away from home to pursue his dream. He sailed for several years as a simple sailor, learned maritime science, and then became a captain. One day I accidentally saw Assol, and he was told that this strange girl was dreaming of a ship with scarlet sails. Arthur entered the port on such a ship. All the residents of the city came running to see the miracle. Assol also heard about this. The girl ran to the port, and Captain Gray took her away, as the old storyteller had predicted.

Assol

The name of the main character has become a household name - this is what they call romantic and open girls. Faith in love and Assol have become synonymous concepts. The image and characterization of Assol from “Scarlet Sails” will help you figure out whether this is really so.

For the first time, the reader meets eight-month-old baby Assol. When she was left without her mother, an old and kind neighbor looked after her for three months, waiting for her sailor father to return home. For her sake, he would leave the sea and take up raising his daughter, whose kind face made him smile. Tanned and thin, with a gentle smile and dark eyes, she resembled a swallow in flight. They lived poorly, the girl always dressed modestly and poorly. But cheap clothes did not become an obstacle to admiring glances - a rare passerby was not surprised by the beauty of Assol.

They lived not far from the sea, in a small house in which Longren, the girl’s father, made his boats. Assol grew up and became his assistant - she carried her father's handicrafts for sale. They lived poorly, but Longren doted on his daughter. The image of Assol in “Scarlet Sails” is pleasant: a modest girl who hid even her luxurious curls under a headscarf. The inhabitants of Kaverna avoided her, they were frightened by her unsociability and insight, hidden in the depths of her charming eyes.

Alone with nature

After the incident with Menners, when Assol’s father was accused of almost his death, their family became wary and shunned. Nature became her closest environment. She talks to trees as if they were friends. Unlike people, they are always happy to see her and greet her with the rustling of leaves. Loneliness took its toll: Assol became timid and rarely smiled. She has a sensitive soul, she is ready to help the first person she meets and was very upset by the insults inflicted on her.

The girl learned everything herself - sewing, cooking, cleaning, saving a very meager budget. The father taught his daughter to read and write, and books became companions in her life. She began to dream with them. The tale of the scarlet sails, which she heard from the kind Egle, firmly settled in the girl’s soul. Everyone laughed at her, but she, true to her dream, waited for the ship. And he came. As in the song Assol (“Scarlet Sails”): “You just have to believe, really believe in the dream.”

Arthur Gray

Young captain Arthur Gray is a romantic who managed to make a girl’s dream come true. The little cabin boy, blown by the fresh sea breeze, matured and became a handsome man with strong muscles. The aristocratic pallor was replaced by a beautiful tan, the youthful carelessness passed away, and the working hands became dexterous and strong. The only thing left from a carefree childhood is the appearance and posture of the count. He is a man of few words, but smart and a wonderful storyteller: his speech is “like a sea stream” with iridescent silver fish.

Assol grew up in a wretched house; in Scarlet Sails, Gray is the complete opposite of her. He grew up in a castle and was unusually inquisitive from childhood. The father is an important official, and Lillian, Arthur's mother, raised her son, loved him and spoiled him, encouraging all his quirks. He ran barefoot wherever he wanted, brought stray dogs into the house, and could give the last thing to the first person he came across. He stood up for the servants and took pity on the poor, trying not to stand out in any way. He grew up generous and noble, parting with the accumulated coins without regret.

Young captain

Luxury and wealth did not spoil this lively young man with a trembling soul. He read a lot, believed in miracles and looked for opportunities for achievement. An inquisitive mind and insight helped him become a good sailor, he chose unexpected routes and gave the crew a lot of time to rest. Calm and self-possessed in appearance, he hid from everyone his heart, in which, like a bird, a dream lived. He fell in love with the sea in early childhood, when he saw a ship in a book. From that moment I set a goal - to become a captain, and confidently walked towards it.

The parents thought that the boy’s hobby would melt away like a mirage. But Arthur, gritting his teeth, comprehended marine science. At the age of 20, he became the captain of his own ship, the Secret. Raised in a noble family, Captain Gray did not make deals with his conscience. The members of his ship did not engage in smuggling, and the relationships in their crew were like in a large and friendly family. The captain was respected, he demanded order and accuracy from everyone, but he himself observed discipline and did everything slowly and deliberately. The dreamer and romantic, having heard about the girl’s dream, sailed beyond Assol with scarlet sails on the masts.

Good fairy tale

The meaning of this story is that a person himself can become the source of his own happiness. This is probably known to many. But in order to achieve the goal and revel in the sunny ocean, sometimes you have to be different from everyone else, not follow the majority. A task feasible for all weak people. But to achieve true happiness, you need to become a source of happiness for others. Having gone to the open sea, the heroes of the story did not reveal the secret of happiness to the reader - the author left it behind the endless horizon of the ocean, where Assol and Gray went. “Scarlet Sails” is the path to happiness; a dream that came true.
