The name chosen for the Tarot Lenormand deck is very symbolic. Few doubt that Maria Lenormand herself is represented in the image of the Priestess in this deck. The most famous fortuneteller Madame Lenormand was in the service and was friends with Josephine Beauharnais, the wife of Napoleon of France and this, in fact, made her famous. Lenormand predicted future victories and the crown for Napoleon himself. After Madame Lenormand predicted Napoleon's defeat in the war with Russia, she was imprisoned. However, her imprisonment was not long. In this portrait of Madame Lenormand as a prisoner, it is not difficult to see how much similarity there is in the Priestess card of the Lenormand Tarot deck and in her own portrait.

Each of the Lenormand cards is numbered and, in addition to the main image, the lasso shows a card that corresponds to the lasso in a regular deck. The numbering was not introduced by chance. In layouts it is used as an additional prediction.
For example, a question: How will the relationship between Maria and Alexander develop in the next three months? The layout is made into three cards, which can be drawn randomly, or laid out in order.
Let the card 11 fall out in the first position, 27 in the second, and 18 in the third. Interpretations:

But today we will talk about a slightly different working tool - the Lenormand Tarot: a full-fledged 78-card deck dedicated to the great fortune teller. Of course, Maria Lenormand herself did not create these cards, however, like the Small and Astro-Mythological deck - they say that she herself used simple playing cards for predictions. It’s just that the plots of the cards are connected with the symbolism and images invented by Lenormand, as well as with the era in which the French Sibyl herself lived.
History of the deck
Oddly enough, very little is written about the Lenormand Tarot on the Internet. Only the names of its creators are known - these are the artist Ernest Fitzpatrick, Alma de Angelis and Pietro Alligo, familiar to many from the Tarot of Consequences. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any more complete information about the author’s idea and work on the deck. Only one thing is clear: the idea of the deck is to perpetuate the memory of the famous French fortuneteller. The deck was published by the Italian publishing house Avvalon Lo Scarabeo in 2006 and 2010.
Key features of the deck
Despite the fact that many attribute this deck to the Waite tradition, I still consider it unique. If the Major Arcana really repeats classical plots in many ways, then the Minor Arcana, in my opinion, are quite far from tradition - they are a combination of the images of the Minor Lenormand deck and the Gypsy Oracle. Although, if we talk about the structure of the Lenormand Tarot card deck, it really repeats the Rider-Waite: 78 Arcana (22 Major, 56 Minor) and four Suits (Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles). The only difference is in the numbering: in the Lenormand Tarot, as in, Strength is in eleventh place, and Justice is in eighth.
Deck symbolism
There is no esoteric symbolism on the cards, which makes it ideal for beginners who do not want to deal with Kabbalistic, astrological and other connections. But here there is a completely different symbolism - this is the use of classical images of Lenormand from the Small Deck. So, for example, we see Tree (2 Pentacles), Cross (2 Swords), Key (3 Wands), Bear (3 Pentacles), Anchor (4 Swords), Birds (4 Wands), Fox (5 Cups), Letter ( 6 of Wands), Ship (6 of Swords), Scythe (8 of Pentacles) and other familiar symbols. True, these symbols do not correspond to the classic card suits as they are presented on the cards of the Small Deck. Therefore, it can be assumed that the authors arranged the images in accordance with the traditional meaning of Waite, or at least tried to do so if possible.
Major Arcana
If you look at the Lenormand Tarot gallery, you will see that the Major Arcana of the deck is practically a classic, but designed in the style of the late 18th and early 19th centuries - this is evidenced by the characteristic clothing of the heroes of the cards. It was during this period of time that the famous French “Sibyl” lived in France. Let's look at some of the Trump decks in more detail.
So, the Fool is not a brave young man recklessly walking towards the edge of a cliff, but a tramp, apparently, who has been traveling for a very long time.
The Priestess card is interesting - they say that the Arcanum is copied from a real portrait of Maria Lenormand. Apparently, this is indeed the case.
The Empress and Emperor are very reminiscent of the famous couple - Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife Josephine Beauharnais.
The emperor differs from the classical one in his pose. He does not sit on a throne, but stands, and in his gaze one can read great determination to act. In fact, we see a clear “Napoleonic” character.
The image of the Hanged Man is very interesting, which takes us back to the times of the French Revolution right to the central square, where many people were executed at that time. The Death card also reminds us of the events of the same time.

Separately, I would like to note the Arcana Star, which in the Lenormand Tarot is called the Stars, referring us to the image of the Stars from the Small Deck. If in the classical Tarot the seventeenth Arcanum tells us about a single guiding star that illuminates a person’s life path, then here we are already seeing a slightly different idea. Thousands of stars shine in the sky, and each of them symbolizes one of the options for the development of our future. The task facing a person is to choose “the one”, his own. An astrologer (most likely the famous Michel Nostradamus) looks at the starry sky through a telescope and, perhaps, is thinking about which star he should study at the moment.
Minor Arcana
In the Lenormand Tarot gallery, out of 78 cards, only the Major Arcana fully fit the classical description, and, as we found out, not all of them. With the Younger, things are different. As I said above, some of them reflect the images of the Small Deck, while others in some way repeat the Gypsy Oracle. It is not very clear why the authors decided to cross these two predictive tools. Most likely, due to the fact that the Gypsy Oracle has many similarities with the Lenormand cards. Apparently, the key idea was to create a deck that, on the one hand, would repeat the structure of the Tarot, and on the other, would be extremely clear to those who work closely with oracle-type decks.
Personally, I really liked the images of Aces - I have probably never seen such beautiful Aces in any deck. Look how interestingly the meanings of these cards are conveyed through illustrations.
But, if you look more closely, the two Aces are still not the author’s vision, but again a reference to the Gypsy Oracle. I think it's not scary at all.
Aces of the Lenormand Tarot in comparison with the Aces of the Gypsy Oracle Now let's look at the cards that are already familiar to us from the Small Lenormand deck. Of course, we will not analyze all the images - after all, familiarization with the deck implies independent work, so just a few random cards as an example.
Let's start with the Six of Swords. Look how amazingly the authors of the Lenormand Tarot have collected in one image not only the image of the Ship from the Small Deck, but also the Merchant from the Gypsy Oracle.
6 of Swords The traditional meaning of the 6 of Swords is a way out of a situation, a change of scenery, an escape from difficulties, a journey. In the Small Deck, the Ship is also associated with relocation, travel, spiritual growth, and the Merchant of the Gypsy Oracle is changes that bring prosperity. Essentially, the meaning of the card represents a new vision of the classics.
Let's take a look at the 9 of Wands card. As you can see, this is a reference to the Small Deck Rats. The classic interpretation is a test of strength, the willingness to defend one’s own, the ability to withstand difficulties. The Rat symbol in the Small Lenormand deck is stress, destruction, theft, damage to property, attack by ill-wishers and other unpleasant phenomena. Do you agree that all this fits well into the meaning of the 9 of Wands?
Let's look at the 3 of Pentacles. Do you recognize your old friend Bear? It symbolizes power, high position, courage, protection, help of some person. This meaning does not exactly repeat the classic interpretation of the Three of Pentacles Tarot, but it fits well into one of its variants.

When interpreting Lenormand Tarot cards, you need not only to know the classical meanings of the Arcana, but also to have an idea of the symbolism of the Small Deck of the French Sibyl and the Gypsy Oracle. Regarding the use of reversed cards, this is a personal decision for each of you. As far as I know, Marie Lenormand never used inverted cards, and her followers also do not use them. Therefore, it seems logical to me not to use reverse values. Although, there is no consensus on this issue.
What questions is the deck suitable for addressing?
The deck is absolutely universal, so you can ask it any questions: about love, money, work, self-development. She will be happy to answer quite concisely and clearly. The only thing I would like to note is that when we talked about Osho Zen Tarot, I mentioned that the deck shows more of an internal plan than an event one. So with the Lenormand Tarot, everything is exactly the opposite: these cards rather describe events to us, rather than a person’s emotional response to them. Therefore, the deck will be very easy to work with for those who are used to receiving answers from the series “important news awaits you, and then a trip,” and not such as “you will feel excitement because of some kind of deception.” But in general, this is a completely working and very “talking” tool.

If you decide to buy Lenormand Tarot cards, you will probably wonder what you can read about them. The MBC for the deck, as in most cases, is not very informative. Apart from a set of keywords for each card, you will not find anything else in this accompanying brochure. But I hasten to disappoint you - not a single full-fledged Russian-language publication for this deck simply exists. I would like to immediately warn you against buying Simone Lefebvre’s book “Tarot Lenormand” - the book has nothing to do with this deck, it describes working with a Small deck of 36 cards, for some reason mistakenly called Tarot.
It is better to study the cards according to your own feelings and use the individual meanings of the symbols of the Small Deck and the Gypsy Oracle - there is a lot of material on them on the Internet and literature in bookstores. By the way, it is the classic Lenormand deck of 36 cards that I recommend reading Anna Kotelnikova’s materials - she presents the information very simply, clearly, but at the same time, voluminously. But in general, due to the absence of any complex esoteric symbolism, the deck, it seems to me, can be studied without additional literature.
People know a large number of different types of fortune telling using the ancient Tarot. The list of new occult decks is constantly growing, but not all of them are worthy of attention. One of the very interesting decks for fortune telling is the Lenormand Tarot.
Tarot Lenormand - an interesting deck for fortune telling
We will talk about a unique deck and about Madame Lenormand herself, her life, how a girl from a simple family became one of the most famous in her field, a great fortune teller, clairvoyant and astrologer. Separately, it is worth paying attention not only to the Lenormand deck itself, but also to talk about its popular layouts.
Madame Lenormand and her story
The famous fortune teller and astrologer was born on May 27, 1772. This unique woman was originally from Alençon, a city located near Paris. Maria grew up in the family of a fabric seller. Father Lenormand died early and after a certain time, the family ran out of money, and the girl had to finish her studies at a convent, where she began to show her abilities as a fortune-teller.
There she first predicted that the boss would not have long to work in the monastery. And indeed, after some time this woman was transferred to another place. Since there was still not enough money in the family, the clairvoyant had to work as a tailor in order to somehow feed herself and her family.
At one point, Maria’s former teacher advised her to go to Paris to earn money. At first, the young girl worked as a merchant, but then she realized that she had the opportunity to earn money with the help of her talents in fortune telling. All in the same Paris, she learned what fortune-telling layouts for fate and the future are and became acquainted with the system of the famous astrologer Etteila, popular at that time.
Some time later, Maria and her friend decide to open a divination salon, in which she spread cards to everyone. In a very short time, Lenormand was able to become famous throughout the capital, gathering in her salon the richest and most noble people of Paris at that time. The most significant role in the life of the clairvoyant was played by her friendly relationship with Napoleon’s wife. At their first meeting, Mary predicted for both of them unlimited power, a crown and a throne.
Naturally, Bonaparte and his faithful wife were skeptical about the astrologer’s predictions. However, ten years later the prophecy came true. After Napoleon ascended the throne, he did not forget about Lenormand and gave her one million francs as a token of gratitude, and to top it off, he made her his wife’s personal fortune teller.
But friendly relations between Napoleon and Lenormand did not last long. At one point, Maria predicted Bonaparte would lose the war with the Russian Empire. For which she was expelled from Paris, although after some time she was still able to return to the capital, after Napoleon abdicated the throne.
In 1821, the fortune teller was tried on charges of blatant lying. She had the imprudence to claim that she was in a relationship with Archangel Gabriel. The court sentenced her to 1 year in prison and a large fine, but the appeal process was successful, and she managed to escape punishment. Since then, Madame Lenormand no longer got involved in politics, and remained famous until her death on June 23, 1843.
Lenormand Tarot Decks
The Amrahs that the fortune teller used were, at first, the most ordinary and primitive gaming deck. The fact is that Lenormand had his own interpretation and system, based on the rules introduced by Etteilla. After her death, to the disappointment of historians, no maps or records with their detailed interpretation remained.
The methods used by the clairvoyant were subject to restoration by her followers, but not completely.
Tarot Lenormand - the most mysterious and popular deck among the nobility
Tarot of Marie Lenormand remained in history as the most mysterious and most popular deck among the nobility. The gallery of the original amrakhs has not survived. To tell the truth, the Lenormand cards were lost to humanity, they were swallowed up by time, not even leaving the technique by which the clairvoyant performed fortune telling on the cards.
The reconstruction closest to the original was made by fortune teller Erna Drusbeke. But this gallery is just echoes, a quiet echo of that truly unique deck. Her book about fortune telling using the Lenormand method was published in 1987, and not the entire gallery was included in the description. Only a few interpretations repeated the original descriptions that Tarot cards from Lenormand had.
To facilitate understanding and the reading process, Drusbeke provided thirty-six amrahs of the gaming deck with images that were applied to the tarot in a unique order and according to her own pattern. It was an extraordinary gallery, but each card had its own meaning, and they all formed a diagram that was easy enough to understand:
- the sun;
- ring;
- cross.
In addition to the ingrained numbering, the deck's amrahs have individual numerical values that help the fortuneteller magician discover new interconnected facts. The gallery helps not only with identifying cards, but also with their interpretation according to each individual layout. This is how a new deck was created, which was called “Gypsy”. They reflect the whole essence and spirit of the time in which Madame Marie Lenormand lived.
When starting fortune telling using the clairvoyant system, you must always remember that the greatest seriousness in Tarot card systems is not the method of laying out the cards, but the method of interpretation. At the moment, many systems are based on their own understanding of symbols, which is very typical for the last century.
Lenormand Tarot spreads
According to the clairvoyant Arcana, it is possible to make a large number of layouts. The layout in the classical Tarot system is a certain type of arrangement of amrahs, which determines what predictions will be discussed. This can be fortune telling about love affairs, career success, personal relationships between different people, well-being and life in general.
Layout for the situation
This layout provides all the detailed information on the topic or situation you want to know about. Situations can be very different - love, business, and personal. This alignment can show the questioner what will happen to him in the future.
To begin, one special card is selected for the questioner. If the client is male, then this will be the twenty-eighth amrakha, which means the ace of hearts, but if the questioner is a woman, then this will be the twenty-ninth amrakha, which means the ace of spades.
This layout consists of four cards, they are opened sequentially.
- The first card will contain information regarding its cause.
- The second card illustrates the fortuneteller’s abilities, sincere support from loved ones. Or exactly the opposite - obstacles or certain troubles.
- The third card is a tip from the Lenormand deck.
- The fourth card says what will happen in the future and how this situation, which the questioned person is so concerned about, will be resolved.

Before you start making a reading, you should focus on the question and think well about what you want to learn from the Arcana.
- The deck is shuffled and removed only with the left hand.
- Next, we take the decks and begin to lay out the cards from the left side to the right and down in rows of eight cards.
- The last row should consist of four amrahs.
- Among all those located, you need to find a couple of main ones: the ace of hearts - the guy and the girl - the ace of spades.
- They will represent the fortuneteller and his significant other.
After this, we remove all the cards and leave only the main ones, and then look into the meanings of Madame Lenormand’s cards.
Numerological layout
A very clear and fascinating view of the Lenormand Tarot spread. He is advised if there is an interest in clarifying a certain situation or event in the future. During fortune telling, the principle of working with serial numbers is used.
We must place thirty-six cards face down, and reveal only four of them according to a special principle:
- The number one card is taken from the first row. It talks about events in the past and present that gave rise to the question being asked.
- To determine card number two, we need to take our first card, look at its number (for example, it will be number five), and count five cards from right to left.
- The card that will be fifth in a row will be our second. She will tell us about the state of the issue at the current time.
- The third card is determined using the same method as the second. It shows what will happen in the future regarding the issue.
- Fourth card. This amrah gives the fortuneteller advice on what to do in the future and what to follow in the current situation. The Council will be envy of what we have done in the past, what we are doing now, and what awaits us in the near future.

Five Elements Alignment
A fairly easy way to do fortune telling. Each card provides detailed information about current affairs in various areas of the fortuneteller’s life, and gives practical advice on issues that require help from the cards.
This layout is a bit like the situation layout. One amrah of the fortuneteller is selected, for the male sex - the twenty-eighth Arcana, for girls - the twenty-ninth. A layout of five cards will appear in front of you, which must be opened one by one. Their meanings are:
- The first card is called “Calling”. This Arcanum tells you what your purpose is in the world and what you should do to realize yourself.
- The second card is “Affairs”. Amrah talks about your material well-being and the state of your work affairs.
- The third card talks about “Relationships”. The card will tell you about your relationship with others, their opinion about you. This also applies to love relationships.

- The fifth card is “Spirit”. The card, which serves as advice for you, indicates the solution to all problems affecting you. As in the previous Numerology spread, this card is determined by adding the numbers of the previous four cards.
As we can now find out for ourselves, although there is no exact Lenormand Tarot card system, its closest copies are very suitable for finding answers to burning questions. They are easy to use, and it doesn’t take much time to understand their essence. This is a wonderful system, developed by the most famous fortune teller in the world - Marie Lenormand.
