Psalm 90 in Russian:

He who lives with the help of the Highest under the roof of the heavenly God will be placed, He will say to the Lord: “You are my protector and my refuge, my God and I trust in Him”. For He will deliver you from the net of fishers and from the rebellious word, He will protect you with His shoulders, and under His wings you will be safe, His truth will protect you with a shield. You will not be afraid of the horror of the night, the arrow that flies during the day, the Calamity that befalls at night, the disease and the midday demon. A thousand will fall beside you, and ten thousand to your right, but it will not come close to you. Only with your eyes will you look and you will see the reward for sinners. For (you said): “You, Lord, my hope,” you have chosen the Highest as your refuge. Evil will not come to you, and the plague will not come near your dwelling. For He commands His angels about you - to keep you in all your ways. They will take you into their arms so that you do not stumble with your foot on a stone. You will step on the asp and the basilisk, and you will trample the lion and the serpent. “Since he trusted in Me, I will deliver him, I will cover him, for he has known My name. He will call upon Me and I will answer him, I am with him in sorrow, I will deliver him and glorify him, With the length of days I will fulfill him and show him My salvation ”.

Interpretation on Psalm 90 by A.P. Lopukhina:

Psalm 90 in verses 1–4 depicts a righteous man who lives only by hope and hope in God, keeping him from numerous enemies, miraculously perishing around the righteous man (Ps. 90: 7–8).

The Lord miraculously lengthens the life of this righteous man (Psalm 90:16). All these features are applicable to Hezekiah, who, during the attack of the Assyrians, sought help only from God, who destroyed 185 thousand enemy troops. Hezekiah's life is known to have been wonderfully extended by 15 years. The psalm should be considered written during the reign of Hezekiah, but who, it is not known, may be the king himself.

As written after God rendered help to the pious king, the psalm contains the praise of the righteous man who lives only by faith and hope in God, in which (faith and hope) is the guarantee of salvation from all the small and large misfortunes of life.

Anyone who lives by faith and hope in God will find in Him a defender who will save from all the misfortunes and evils of life. Even military attacks by enemies will not harm: the enemies will all die. Since you have chosen God as your refuge, He will protect You with His Angels. Any prayer of such a righteous man will be heard by the Lord, who will glorify him and "satisfy him with the length of days."

He who lives under the shelter of the Almighty rests under the shadow of the Almighty. He says to the Lord: "My refuge and my protection, my God, in Whom I trust!" "Living under the shelter of the Most High" - living with hope in God, so deep that he seeks intercession only from Him alone, that "Rests in the shadow of the Almighty" - will use His shelter, protection. The comparison is taken from the custom of ancient Eastern hospitality, when a foreigner who entered a native's tent found complete peace and protection in it.

“He will deliver you from the catcher's net, from the fatal ulcer, he will overshadow you with His feathers, and you will be safe under His wings; shield and enclosure are His truth. You will not be afraid of the horrors in the night, the arrow that flies during the day, the ulcer that walks in the darkness, the infection that devastates at noon. A thousand will fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but he will not come close to you: only you will look with your eyes and see the retribution of the wicked "- No matter how varied, numerous and great the calamities that threaten this righteous man, the Lord will deliver him from all of them. He will deliver "From the catcher's net" - in general from any danger caused by cunning; "From a fatal ulcer" - from everything that brings death, harm. The Lord will protect him with the same warning love with which a mother hen takes her young under her wings, where they feel completely safe (“under His wings you will be safe”). This is because “His truth” will be a protective weapon for man. Since God loves the truth, then he will protect the one who is true before Him. "Horrors of the Night" - hidden covert attacks; from "Arrows flying during the day" - from obvious attacks; from "An ulcer that walks in the dark" - from actions hiding in the darkness of intrigues, intrigues; (accidental illness); from "The plague that devastates at noon" - from the actions of the southern burning wind, which dries up all vegetation. If the enemies attacked the righteous in an unusually large number, then the Lord would destroy them. "One thousand and ten thousand" - in enormous numbers, but none of the destructive calamities sent by God to the enemies will touch the righteous.

"No evil will happen to you" - the disaster will not touch you personally, "The plague will not come near your dwelling place" - not your property. All this was fulfilled on Hezekiah when the Assyrians attacked.

“For he will command his angels about you - to guard you in all your ways: they will carry you in their arms, so that your foot will not stumble over a stone; you will step on the asp and the basilisk; you will trample the lion and the dragon. Because he loved Me, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he has come to know my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; with him I am in sorrow; I will deliver him and glorify him, I will satisfy him with the length of days, and I will show him my salvation ”. - The Lord will protect his righteous man with miraculous power. He will send him a guardian angel, who, as it were, will carry him through the dangers. Asp and basilisk (genera of poisonous snakes, basilisk - spectacle snake) will not harm him; Neither a lion nor a dragon (probably a boa constrictor or a boa) will harm him, since the Lord will always hear him because the righteous man loves Me. The Lord will fulfill him with "the length of days" - not only will he not deprive him of life prematurely, but will prolong it miraculously beyond its natural duration, which was the case with Hezekiah.

Since earlier it was said about the miraculous protection of the righteous by God, then by “length of days” we can mean not the natural, ordinary duration of human life, but its miraculous lengthening.
In this psalm, the writer's speech often changes: either he speaks about the righteous in general, then he addresses him personally, then he merges with him in prayer before God.

This psalm is the final psalm of the 6th hour. Having instructed every believer in the preceding two psalms of this hour to due attendance at the liturgy, here the Church with the words of this song promises them for the same reward from God that Hezekiah received for his faith in Him. He is also promised the "gift of salvation" received through the worthy acceptance of Christ into oneself in the Eucharist.

Miracles of prayer.

F.L. Rawson, an eminent engineer and one of the greatest scientists in England, the author of the book "Mindfulness of Life", tells of an amazing incident in the history of an English regiment during World War II.

Under the command of Colonel Whittlysie for 5 years of hostilities, the regiment did not lose a single soldier. This incredible result was made possible by the fact that officers and soldiers regularly performed from memory and repeated the words of Psalm 90, called the Psalm of Defense.

Through the constant repetition of the truths contained in the 90th Psalm, the soldiers in Colonel Whittlysie's regiment acquired the feeling as if they were being guarded by an Unblind Presence. Through the constant repetition of the Psalm, faith and hope, these truths penetrated their subconscious minds, brought into it an inner conviction in constant Divine protection.

In addition, believers are advised to know in memory the prayers - Our Father, the Symbol of Faith, read Psalm 90, recite the prayer rule from Seraphim of Sarov and Psalm 50.

This article will focus on the well-known Psalm 90. It must be admitted that the modernization of the old texts of conspiracies and prayers seems to be an occupation not only empty, but somewhat destructive.

After all, a conspiracy or prayer is a kind of sound code in which every word, every letter, and even stress and intonation is important. The adaptation of old texts to modern rules of spelling and pronunciation changes the sound code to such an extent that a prayer or a conspiracy “becomes unlike itself” loses its power.

Perhaps, there is no second such mysterious and, at the same time, demanded prayer in Orthodoxy as Psalm 90. Its text, which at first seems reminiscent of some ancient conspiracy, reveals its entire meaning to those who sincerely pray and ask God for help and understanding. This, of course, applies not only to Psalm 90, which every Orthodox Christian has to read every day, since it is included in the daily prayer rule, but also to all other prayers. To understand the essence, it is not enough to read Psalm 90 in Russian - it will only help to understand unfamiliar words, but not to delve into the deep essence of this powerful Christian prayer. When reading it, much depends on the spiritual state of a person: some of the meaning of the psalm is revealed after the first reading, others need to familiarize themselves with the interpretation of psalm 90 in order to avoid delusions caused by self-interpretation.

Below is the translation of the interpretation of the 90th psalm, which was written by the blessed Theodorite of Kirr in the 4th century.

"Praise of the song of David, not inscribed by the Jew."

The psalm does not have an inscription, but it shows the irresistible hope in God. For blessed David, seeing from afar with spiritual eyes what would happen to blessed Hezekiah, and seeing how he, placing hope in God, crushed the Assyrian army - he pronounced this psalm, indicating to all people what an abundance of blessings lies in trusting in God.

Ps. 90: 1 . He who lives under the shelter of the Almighty rests under the shadow of the Almighty.

??? "Alive in the help of the Most High, he will settle in the roof of the Heavenly God"... He who relies on God's care for him will take advantage of the protection from the Heavenly God and will have this solid fence, this invincible protection.

Ps. 90: 2 . He says to the Lord: "My refuge and my protection, my God, in Whom I trust!"

"The Lord speaks: Thou art my intercessor and my refuge, my God, and I hope in Him"... For, having firm trust in God, he will call Him a patron, guardian and indestructible fence.

Ps. 90: 3 . He will deliver you from the catcher's net, from the fatal ulcer.

??? "Yako Toy will save you from the trap's net and rebellious from the word"... From here, the Prophet begins a speech addressed to the one who believes himself, and encourages him, saying that God will make him the winner not only of obvious enemies, but also those who lie in wait, prepare ambushes and secretly plot intrigues; because setiu signified secret intrigues, and instead of this: “a rebellious word”, Symmachus translated: “an offensive word”; such are the words of those who intertwine with lies and slander. However, many won over this also by trusting in God. So the great Joseph, bearing slander in adultery, escaped the nets, so the wonderful Susanna took advantage of the help from above.

Ps. 90: 4 . He will overshadow you with His feathers, and under His wings you will be safe; shield and enclosure are His truth.

??? "His splash will overshadow thee, and hope for His krill"... God will be your protector, and will cover you when enemies attack. The figurative image of speech is borrowed from those who stand in the front rows during the battle, and cover those behind with their shoulders. And the Prophet calls the actions of the providence with wings, and used this expression, taking in the likeness of birds, which cover chicks with wings. So blessed Moses called God's guardianship with wings, and says: “Save it like the apple of your eye. As if the eagle covered its nest, and thirsty for its chicks: it stretched out its wing, and will delight them, and lift them up on its frame. "(Deut. 32 : 10-11). This the Lord also spoke to Jerusalem: "Kolcraty, please, bring your children together, as if he gathers his kokosch chicks under the krill, and will you not?"(Matt. 23 :37).
??? "His truth will go round thee with weapons." Because I mentioned above the word rebellious and deceitful; By the way, he promises here that the truth will be his whole armor.

Ps. 90: 5 . You will not be afraid of the horrors in the night, the arrows flying during the day.

Psalm 90: 6. The plague that walks in the dark, the plague that ravages at noon.

??? "Do not be afraid of the fear of the night, of the flying arrow in days":
??? "From a thing in the darkness of the transitory, from the waste and the demon of midday"... You will overcome not only sensual, but also mental, enemies with divine hope, you will avoid threatening intrigues at night, and enemy attacks during the day, and with full confidence, as guarded by God, you will rid yourself of fear, you will not come into fear in the middle of the day, but you will avoid demonic slander, using the help from above. The expression: "the devil at noon," the Prophet used in accordance with the opinion accepted by many, because it is natural for an insidious person to rush at someone after taking food and after satiety, as at a ready-made prey, and it is not difficult to enslave someone who is deprived of care about him from above.

Ps. 90: 7 . A thousand will fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it won't come close to you:

Psalm 90: 8. Only you will look with your eyes and see the retribution of the wicked.

??? "Thousands of your country will fall, and tma at your right hand will not come close to you". "Look at your eyes and see the retribution of sinners"... Instead of: "From your country" Symmachus and Aquila translated "in front of you." The Prophet says that if an innumerable multitude comes out on the right and on the left, you will not be harmed, and you will see them deposed by Divine punishment. This was in the time of Hezekiah, because one hundred and eighty-five thousand Assyrians were slain without weapons of war. So under Gideon, so under Jonathan, as well as under Jehoshaphat and under the prophet Elisha, it was the same.

Psalm 90: 9 . For you said: "The Lord is my hope"; You have chosen the Almighty as your refuge.

??? "Like Thou, Lord, my hope: the Most High, Thou hast laid thy refuge."... You will be worthy of this providence, says the Prophet, having given yourself up to hope in God, and having made Him a refuge. For the composition of speech lacks the following: You said, "Lord, my hope"; and this is a distinctive feature of the prophetic writings, especially the psalms. However, the connection of speech makes this very incomplete. It is said: since you trust in God and call on Him for help, you will be worthy of His care.

Ps. 90:10 . Evil will not happen to you, and the plague will not come near your dwelling.

??? "Evil will not come to you, and the wound will not come near your village. " You will overcome the diabolical adversaries and therefore will not suffer harm. Thus, Divine grace surrounded the house of Job; witness to this is the enemy himself, who cries out: "Have you not fenced off the external and internal to his house?"(Job. 1 :10). When God let go, and the enemy showed his malice, and the righteous Judge crowned the victorious ascetic.

Psalm 90:11 . For he will command his angels about you - to guard you in all your ways.

??? "Like His Angel is a commandment about you, keep you in all your ways"... He said this in the thirty-third psalm: "The Angel of the Lord will take up arms around those who fear Him and will deliver them"(Ps. 33 :eight). We heard that the patriarch Jacob says: "An angel like me delivers from all evils"(Gen. 48 :sixteen). And the great Abraham, encouraging the servant, said: “God Send His Angel before You, and have a wife for my son Isaac, I will go away "(Gen. 24 : 7). Therefore, we learn from everything that God of all by means of Angels protects those who trust in Him.

Ps. 90:12 . They will carry you in their arms, so you do not stumble on a stone with your foot.

??? "They will take thee in their arms, but not when they knock your foot on a stone"... You will use from them all sorts of providences about you, so that not the slightest harm happens to you from anywhere. For a little harm the Prophet meant by the words: "to stumble on a stone", and the expression: "They will take thee in their arms", means: they will lead by the hand, show the way, give any help.

Psalm 90:13 . You will step on the asp and the basilisk; you will trample the lion and the dragon.

??? "Step on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent"... The Prophet mentioned the most powerful and fierce beasts, wishing to express his prevalence over all kinds of guile. For by the lion and the serpent he signified strength, because these animals are very strong, and under the asp and the basilisk he meant extreme deceit, because the asp emits deadly poison, and the basilisk causes harm with his very sight. However, many, believing in God, overcame these beasts. Thus the wonderful Daniel bound the lips of the lions; so the divine Paul was not harmed by the echidna; so Noah, living with the beasts, remained unharmed; so thousands of those who loved the wilderness life, staying with the beasts, trusting in God, avoided their hostile attack.

Psalm 90:14 . “Because he loved Me, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he has come to know my name.

Psalm 90:15. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; with him I am in sorrow; I will deliver him and glorify him.

??? "For I will trust in Me, and I will deliver and?: Will I cover and?, As if My name is known"... He will call upon me, and I will hear him. At last God uttered this to all, showing what the fruit of hope is. For he says: I will deliver him, shielded by trust in Me, from the above-mentioned visible and invisible bribes. And for this I will protect and cover him, I will hear, as soon as he begins to speak, and I will receive his petition.
??? "I am with him in sorrow." If he falls into any temptation, I will be with him, and give him sufficient comfort.
??? "I will insult him and glorify him." I will not only free him from his sorrows, but also make him glorious.

Psalm 90:16 . With the length of days I will satisfy him, and I will show him my salvation. "

??? "With the length of days I will fulfill him, and I will show him my salvation"... I will allow him to reach a ripe old age and first "show salvation" which is being prepared for him in his future life. Blessed Hezekiah was honored with this, because, asking for the application of years of life, he received it for fifteen years and acquired a great eminence for himself by the death of the Assyrians. These words are very befitting to him: "I will scourge him and glorify him, and I will show him my salvation"... But all those who trust in God will enjoy all kinds of blessings, as ancient history shows and as evidenced by what is seen today.
